Book An AppointmentWebby Hills Cancer Center provides cutting-edge radiation treatments called “Cyberknife” radiosurgery. If you are looking for this type of treatment, our facility is one of the most accommodating and comfortable atmospheres in the world to receive it.
The Cyberknife system is the world’s first and only robotic radiosurgery system. This technology brings the benefits of radiosurgery to the treatment of tumors anywhere in the body and can often prevent the need for surgery. It provides a pain free, non-surgical alternative for patients, and can also be used for patients diagnosed with surgically inoperable or complex tumors.
Cyberknife treatments are given on an outpatient basis, are completely non-invasive and do not require general anesthesia. Most Cyberknife patients can return to normal activities almost immediately following treatment.
The Cyberknife system uses image guidance and computer controlled robotics to deliver pinpoint, high dose radiation beams from virtually any direction with sub-millimeter accuracy. Due the high degree of mobility and the ability to deliver high precision radiation treatments, the Cyberknife system is able to minimize damage to surrounding healthy tissues and nearby critical structures such as the eye, spinal cord. The Cyberknife system is ideal for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for tumors or metastatic lesions of the brain as well as stereotactic body radiosurgery (SBRT) of the lung, liver, spine, etc. The Cyberknifie system has also proven to be especially useful for re-treatment of an area that has already received radiation therapy previously anywhere in the body.
Unlike conventional radiation therapy, which delivers low dose radiation in 30 to 45 treatments, Cyberknife radiosurgery delivers high dose radiation in as few as one to five treatments. The Cyberknife system can be used by itself as an alternative to surgery and is also sometimes used following surgery.
The Cyberknife system is unique because it has the ability to automatically correct treatment delivery for even the slightest movement in the tumor or the patient. This ability is important for treating tumors that move, particularly those in the spine, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate.
As an example, a lung tumor moves constantly while the patient breathes. With conventional radiation, oncologists have to radiate the whole area where the tumor might be during any phase of respiration. With the Cyberknife, the radiation device actually tracks the tumor and allows it to give a very focused dose of radiation to the tumor, not the surrounding, healthy lung tissue.
The Cyberknife literally can move around the room to provide high dose radiation to any area of the body with total precision. It can come from any angle to the patient.
Unhindered by the clockwise, counterclockwise constraints of traditional radiation systems, the Cyberknife system’s robotic mobility has significantly improved dose sculpting capabilities and dose distributions.
At the Webby Hills Cancer Center we strive to be on the cutting edge of radiation treatment delivery. Our radiation oncologists have developed a total familiarity with the Cyberknife system and are happy to be able to offer treatments with this groundbreaking device to our patients.
