A sarcoma is a form of cancer that can develop in various types of body tissue, from soft tissues to bones. When growing in the soft tissues, it can affect the fatty tissues, blood vessels, skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, or muscles. This cancer appears more frequently in children but can affect people of any age.

What are the symptoms of sarcoma?

Soft tissue sarcomas may not present symptoms when in the early stages. As cancer progresses, a noticeable lump or swelling may appear, which may be painless. When the sarcoma has impacted tissues, nerves, and muscles, the lump may be painful. In bone sarcoma, the first symptom may be a pain, with or without a visible growth.

Types of soft tissue sarcomas

  • Angiosarcoma: These sarcomas develop in the blood or the lymph vessels.
  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors: These cancers appear in the digestive tracts, developing in the neuromuscular cells.
  • Liposarcoma: These cancers develop in the fatty tissues.
  • Leiomyosarcoma: These sarcomas affect the smooth organ muscle walls, typically appearing in the abdomen.
  • Synovial sarcoma: A tumor of the stem cells, often developing around the joints in the body.
  • Neurofibrosarcoma: A cancer of the nerve lining.
  • Rhabdomyosarcoma: Appears in the skeletal muscles.
  • Fibrosarcomas: Fibroblasts, the cells of the connective tissues in the body, are affected.
  • Myxofibrosarcoma: These sarcomas affect the connective tissues, typically appearing in the arms or legs in older people.
  • Mesenchymomas: Rare, but can appear on any area of the body, occurring most often in the head, neck, arms, and legs.
  • Vascular sarcoma: Develops in the blood vessels.
  • Kaposi’s sarcoma: Affects the skin or other tissues, associated with herpes virus 8.

Types of bone sarcomas

  • Osteosarcoma: These sarcomas develop in the bone structure.
  • Ewing sarcoma: Develops in either the bone or soft tissue.
  • Chondrosarcoma: A sarcoma that develops in the cartilage.
  • Fibrosarcoma: Develops in the connective tissues.

Sarcoma treatments

Surgery: Surgical excision of the cancerous tissue and the nearby tissues.
Radiation: Radiation therapy can be performed before or after surgery, or both.
Chemotherapy: Chemo may be administered either before or after surgery. Chemotherapy is  most effective in treating bone sarcomas, so other medications may be prescribed to treat soft tissue sarcomas.
